Woodside, Calif., Oct. 1, 2011 — Riders from up and down the West Coast are aiming for The International Event At Woodside, on Oct. 7-9. A mixture of international veterans and aspiring younger riders are among those who plan to start in the CIC3*, Woodside’s featured division.

A total of 16 horses are entered in the CIC3*, which offers prize money of $9,000. Another 19 horses are entered in the CIC2*, with $6,000 in prize money, and 17 horses are entered in the CIC1*, with $3,000 in prize money.

Riders and horses to watch for, as they gallop around the scenic cross-country course that’s the centerpiece of the Horse Park of Woodside, range from experienced pairs like Sandra Donnelly of Calgary, Alta., and Buenos Aires, who represented Canada at the 2008 Olympics, to John Michael Durr of Sebastopol, Calif., who won the advanced division at the Event At Woodside in August on the stallion Warrick but is aiming to place in a CIC3* for the first time.

James Alliston lives in Castro Valley, Calif., but still rides for his native England. He guided two horses to top-20 finishes at the Rolex Kentucky CCI4* in April, and he’ll be trying to win Woodside with one of them, Jumbo’s Jake. Kristi Walker of Washougal, Wash., and Myelusivedream beat Durr and Warrick at the May Woodside event, but they’ll be making their first CIC3* start.

Other pairs include such rising stars as Anna Collier of Vancouver, Wash., with two horses, Uppercrust D and Udealer. With Uppercrust D, Collier won the Galway Downs CCI2* in 2008. Jolie Wentworth, of Martinez, Calif., and Jennifer Wooten-Dafoe, of Buellton, Calif., are each experienced international competitors who will both be aiming for first place, riding Goodknight and Nabouco De Lessey.

The CIC2* could be a contest between Lauren Billys, of Visalia, Calif., on Ballingowan Ginger and Bea di Grazia, of Monterey, Calif., on Lad’s Night Out. Ballingowan Ginger has won the intermediate divisions in a row this summer, at The Event At Woodside in August and at Twin Rivers in September. Lad’s Night Out finished second in the August Woodside event and was also second in the May Woodside event.

But Billys and di Grazia will be looking over their shoulders for Hawley Bennett-Awad, a member of the silver-medal Canadian team at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and at the 2011 Pan Am Games. Bennett-Awad is riding both Splendorofthesun and Cambridge.

Dressage will get the competition rolling on Friday at 8:00 a.m. in the Bay Arena, where the international competitors will show jump on Friday afternoon. The CIC3* horses will start jumping about 5:00 p.m., after the rest of the day’s competition has ended. Then, on Saturday afternoon, the international horses will face the challenges of Derek di Grazia’s cross-country course, in reverse order of their two-phase standing. The awards presentation for the CIC3*, CIC2* and CIC1* will follow on Saturday evening, in the ringside tent. The national divisions, with more than 250 horses, will continue competing through Sunday.
