Woodside, Calif., May 24, 2011 \u2013 The University of California-Davis, home of the California School of Veterinary Medicine, today issued a statement in regard to precautions show managers should take in regard to the current outbreak of the neurological strain of EHV-1. The UC Davis recommendations mirror the precautions already planned by the organizers of The Event At Woodside on may 27-29.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s UC Davis statement says, \u201cNow that we have obtained more information through ongoing testing, reporting and monitoring, we have concluded that the EHV-1 infection outbreak is centered around horses that were present at the National Cutting Horse Association\u2019s Western National Championships (NCHA) held at the Golden Spike Event Center in Ogden, Utah from April 30th to May 8th and\/or the Kern County Cutting Event in Bakersfield, CA on May 13th. This includes cutting horses that did not attend either of the above events but have subsequently come into contact with horses returning from those events.\u201d<\/p>\n
UC Davis then recommends that show organizers conduct mandatory veterinary inspections of all horses and institute a \u201cno-fever\u201d policy, under which any horse with a temperature above 102 degrees will be automatically removed from the grounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very pleased that these recommendations, by the state\u2019s most-respected veterinary center, are so similar to the plans to protect our horses we\u2019d already made in consultation with our veterinarians,\u201d said Woodside organizer Robert Kellerhouse. \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to providing our competitors with a biologically safe and enjoyable competition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The feature of The Event At Woodside is the Woodside Preliminary Challenge, presented by Point Two Air Jackets, Professional\u2019s Choice and Equine Insurance of California. Riders in the two divisions will be competing for $15,000 in prize money and another $15,000 in prizes.<\/p>\n
